Wolf is her mate, stalks her on the way to grandma's house. She is returning from selling the goods at the market. They (grandma/Rose) often make money by making tinctures and herbal remedies from the plants in the forest
The woodcutter is the "bad guy", murdering any wolves he comes across in the forest. This is done in revenge for a rogue wolf raping/impregnating his beloved wife. As it was too dangerous to abort, the woodcutter gave away the baby, who was raised by the grandmother, his wife's mother. His beloved wife passed away giving birth to the wolf's "monstrous" offspring, a beautiful baby girl with bright red hair.
The woodcutter often watched little Rose as she grew. Tormented by the fact that she with each passing year she looked more and more like her mother, his beloved wife, all except for that blazing red hair. That she inherited from her father, the wolf.
